FREE Phone Calls using VoIP

"Voice over IP" (VoIP) - the FUTURE in telecommunications.

You may have heard of it. You can be assured you'll be hearing a lot more ... and it's available NOW!

Telco's are concerned that VoIP will reduce their phone-call revenue … and from our calculations, their right.

It can certainly reduce your phone call costs. We use it and we've checked the call costs compared with our current Telco phone bill.

It is reducing our own call costs by 30%-50%.

There are many solutions becoming available for larger corporates. However, here we will discuss a system that will suit the small business or personal user.

Using the FREE internet VoIP phone software (softphone) you can make FREE phone calls from your computer to any other computer using the same 'softphone' software.

YOU CAN ALSO CALL LONG DISTANCE AND MOBILES AT SPECIAL RATES

In addition to FREE CALLS from computer to computer, using VoIP to call normal phones will also save you money*:

Local Calls Cheaper than a local call cost for calls up to 3-5 minutes*
Long Distance Cheaper all round*
Calls to mobiles Cheaper for calls up to 2-5 minutes*

*Depending on your current plan. Most calls we make; from business to business; from business to mobiles …average 2 minutes.

NO Flagfall - Timing is per second

Telcos make a lot of money from the flagfall on short calls (check your account and see). Many plans include charging in 30 second blocks (whether you use the full 30 seconds or not).

We've compared the call rates of all the VoIP providers we could find on the internet (most of them are USA based) and believe it or not, this provider (based in Australia) seems to have the best rates.

An internet phone-call uses approximately 10mb of bandwidth per hour, so you need DSL or cable and if you're going to be making a LOT of calls, ideally you should have an 'unlimited' ISP account

You will need one of the following plugged into your computer:

  • A USB headset. This is the best option - your hands are free to type, use your mouse, write etc. Because it plugs in to a USB port, you can still have your speakers connected as normal. USB headsets are available for under AUD$100 OR
  • A USB phone Similar in size and appearance to a cordless phone. Enables you to dial from the phone keypad rather than the software "keypad" on your computer screen. OR
  • A microphone and speakers. Works OK. However, the person on the other end may get feedback because their voice feeds back into your microphone. OR
  • A normal PC headset that plugs into your sound card. You'll need to use via double adaptor plug/s so you can still use your your normal speakers (if you have them). Instructions with diagrams are available on Firefly website.

There are NO contracts … and NO minimum commitments.

How do you get started?:

  1. If you simply want to use the FREE Firefly VoIP phone service, go to the Freshtel Firefly website, set up your account, download the "softphone" software and install it on your computer.

It's FREE to call other Firefly users. The only time you will be required to pay for Firefly calls is if you call a normal landline or mobile ... at low, low calling rates.
